Mission and Values

The mission of Dunleith is to provide a quality educational experience that meets individual needs and is supported by the home and community. Our vision is to develop in our students the academic skills and character necessary for success in high school, college, the work force, and life. Dunleith's Media Center strives to support the mission and goals of our Literacy Academy. We exist to provide instructional support and information resources that enable our students to achieve academic success. We encourage a love of reading for both pleasure and information. We are committed to the principles of information literacy for all students as outlined by National Education Technology Standards.

Our Media Center contains approximately 9,000 items of age-appropriate material to fulfill this mission. Audiovisual equipment, housed in the Media Center, is available for teachers to use in the classroom.

Media Center hours are 8:30 a.m. until 3:10 p.m.

Collection Development

Dunleith's media staff endorse a policy of inclusion in its collection development efforts i.e, diversity of ideas, multiculturalism, and freedom of speech and thought based on the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In keeping with Dunleith values are the following:

  1. Our collection is unbiased and includes examples of cultures and beliefs from a perspective that is inclusive of the many students, families, and teachers in our school
  2. We exist as the information and resource hub of the school
  3. We are committed to promoting reading for pleasure and providing student requests for materials
  4. We are committed to provision of assistance with respect to collaborative technologies for teachers and students

The American Association of School Librarians has updated the ALA standards for lifelong learning for students.

Borrowing Privileges

Students may keep library materials for two weeks. We do not charge overdue fines; however, any item that is lost or damaged must be paid for before new library books can be checked out.

Kindergarten students have a limit of one book to be checked out at any time. These books are to remain in the classroom with their teacher. First through Fifth Grade may check out two books at any time that they may take home.

Students visit the Media Center regularly with their class. During this time, students are able to check out library books, listen to read alouds, engage in informational and/or collaborative lessons, and participate in creative, hands-on learning experiences.
